“A Man of the Crowd” is a beautifully written text even read partly as an extract. It is full of artistic descriptions making its own atmosphere of London and its people.
The plot and main idea is the writer, who follows the stranger and describing his way and observations. That’s actually is the main idea of what is this text about without looking deeply in it. The words story written with are making me feel the tinge of history, and the atmosphere created by them are making me feel melancholy for some reason. It is a beautiful and absolutely artistic way for people describing. I understand why Baudelaire names “A Man of the Crowd” as a picture. The way it is written makes you able to feel, to understand and to see (in a way) what the author wanted us to, and what he was like. I could even say there is its own magic in it.
So, the story introduces us, mostly, the people. Even though it is said the portrait of the city is illustrated in a man who was followed by the artist, there are descriptions of the crowd and people in it, what gives the portrait more details and makes it more true, collected from different people, joined in one, instead of taking a random human as way to illustrate the whole town.
The difference between day- and nightlife is shown by illustrating how different are people preferring to show or hide in one of these. As I got it, the writer describes “day-people” as busy ones, with gloomy faces and living in their dog-eat-dog own world. On the other hand, there is another "day" kind, being restless, connected to people and making fake unrealistic smiles on critique, having good manners, but maybe not always in a correct form of it. Night people are seeming to be sincerer in their ugly face of human being. Also, it was some about people preferring to stay at home at night, quickly disappearing from a window view, but yet, still able to tell their life story hidden in their eyes.
I am the person who would like to disagree with that picture, to say it is a very generalizing and even superficial way of describing people, but who am I to say how should be described people living almost two hundred years ago?
Summing up, “A Man of the Crowd” is a text with a special atmosphere in it, showing us busy, mean, drunk and being in their own privacy people, different and similar in their existence, connected all by one places to live in, and choosing different palaces and roles to be in their city.
