My original idea of a sculpture has changed into a book with illustrations and then into a zine, so my original timeline is destroyed.
At first, I planned to make a sculpture with papier mashe, so it required from
me to gain some knowledge on the topic, to get the needed materials. I’ve been
making papier mashe in primary school, so I have some ideas about how it is done, but definitely don’t remember what amount of materials I need, and how exactly it
is done. Plus, I don’t know how to make a human-like figure, since all that I
have been doing was based on a balloon, which has a round form. I also should have
figured out what to do with this huge sculpture after the semester. It would be
a pity to throw it away, but I have no storage for it and obviously wouldn’t be
able to move it to my home country. So these were some tasks I needed to solve
even before making the sculpture itself. I also wasn’t sure if it would be easy
enough or really time-consuming, so my timeline wasn’t that clear, but it
definitely was possible to make it during the semester.
I also wanted to make a book with materials from my own survey, and with some
scientific articles, I’ve found, so people would have an easier opportunity to
read content on the sculpture.
Secondly, I wanted to create a book with illustrations. The idea was to make a book
that would look like a parenting book and would be interesting for parents and
teens to read. Also, lots of parents' books have illustrations as children's
literature, so I find it really interesting, and thought it would be a fun
detail, especially since punishments are the topic. I also wasn’t sure at
first if it should be a comic book or a book with pictures. I guess the final idea
was to make something in-between, and make some dialogue bubbles if needed, but
to keep most of the text as paragraphs. I wanted to use all of the knowledge I
had, to gain more, and maybe even contact some psychologists and educators
and ask them for their opinion, and add their comments. To make the whole book as a dialogue between children, parents, scientists, teachers and psychologists. To
provide different perspectives and opinions. I wanted to prove my point, but
make it more as a debate, so each reader would be able to make his own
decision, and so people who think about punishments as a necessity wouldn’t be
negatively minded and defend themselves, and it would be easier to provide my
point to them.
Lastly, I ended up on zine creation, since it isn’t that hard. I am not sure I
can come up with the plot for such a huge project as a book. Zine, on the other
hand, has various content, so I should think about several smaller tasks, then
one huge task. I also think it gives me more freedom with the materials I gained
from children since I can add them in their row form, write my opinion about
them, redraw their drawings, make tests based on the result, and maybe make a
comic out of one of the shared stories. It gives me much more freedom of interpretation,
while still being one project. I am also really happy I got some discussions
with my classmates, and some other students were making zines as well, so it
gave me some ideas of what exactly I want my project to be.
