The “Art cannot be Taught” extract basically says the same
thing could be seen in its name. Gustave Courbet literally says every artist
should be his own teacher, saying art can’t be taught by others but could be
learned by yourself. He argues this main statement, saying art is individual
and depends on our own experience, knowledge, and interests. Also, he says an artist
must and could draw only something related to the time he lives in because art is
representing reality. Even history art must represent historical moments
from the time the artist lives in.
Is it possible to teach others to make art? Well yeah, it
is, in some way. It is easier to imagine that now, because nowadays there is
lots of knowledge, so the artist has an opportunity to choose and to combine. So
it is possible to gain some kind of basic knowledge’s, like perspective,
anatomy, or different techniques with different materials. Yet, it is still not
teaching how to make art, it is more about how to reach goals you as an artist
have, and what do you need to know to be able to create the idea you have.
Freedom of choosing gives the artist an opportunity to choose the teacher, and
what is he interested in, so he could be taught how to make art better. Better
in his way.
Does art really depend on the artist’s personality? It truly
does. It is not a secret for anyone, the artist represents himself in all of his
drawings. Maybe a little, just a tiny piece of the creator in the creation, but it
would be inside there. Even with different people drawing the same thing in a similar
style, we would find out how different the arts are. And it is not even
mentioning the difference in style, the way of creating (somebody might do a
sculpture instead of a drawing), and objects an artist would choose by themselves
while making art. Each step in making artwork is individual, so it makes the
artworks special by itself, as a piece the artist decided to make.
Should art be made only about the time the human lives in?
No, it should not. But looking deeper in that, it would be anyways. Of course, there is no sense in forbidding artist to draw past or future. But the point
is, by creating it, an artist would do art, representing the time he lives in.
Not just because of creating anything in a specific time period, but because of the
time artist lives in makes the influence on his past understanding and future imagining.
Something from what’ve been happing in past would be newer drawn today because
we don’t have any knowledge saved till now, it even ever happened. And the way
we see the future depends on the things we see now. People riding on horses
wouldn’t think about flying cars, because there even were no cars in their
time, to imagine them fly. So it is important for an artist to make art about a different
time period. To save the history we have, and to let the future people make fun
of our suggestions for the future.
