Communication with pop and niche culture

Nowadays almost everyone has pages on some social networks. So, it was an easy and obvious choice to surround myself only with stuff I am interested in or I might be interested in, and by friends with the same taste. That is how almost all information received became a piece I would like to see. That data space creates a false feeling – most people share the same interests and point of view as do I. All I like feels as popular culture in the niche culture space I have created. That is an internet false pop culture trap I have created myself, so now it is really hard to understand – what is popular in general and what is popular only in the limited space of people who share my interests.

And yet, there is something left - the influence of popular culture seen best in cinema. For example, some movies as “Pirates of The Caribbean” or “Titanic” was never seen by me only because of how popular they are. The fact of something being popular awakes the feeling the mass are tasteless and the piece is horrible. Probably because niche communities usually ridicule pop culture.

Actually, this idea shows itself as a bit truthful since none of the popular movies seen was remembered as well as some of unpopular. But still, part of them are nice entertainment such as the Marvel franchise. It strengthened my relations with people I saw Marvel movies with. It is also easier to be keen on pop-culture in terms of friendship. Being in love with something popular gives the ability to find good presents faster, to start a dialogue with someone easily, to find some related stuff without searching for hours on the internet and etc. Pop culture is an investment in relationships and contacts.

On the other hand, there are some definitely unpopular movies. My favourite cinema film is “Three Idiots” – Indian masterpiece. It changed a lot in worldview for me and my friends. It answers some important questions – such as “What is friendship?” or “How to find yourself?”. It gives some thoughts of life and death, education, courage, family and love. I have seen it for the first time in my teens, and it gave me a lot. This movie is one of the reasons why I am here, and it helped me (and even some of my friends) to find the sense, the goal of life.

It seems as niche culture is a way to find true friends you have same interests and way of thinking with. It is more personal, and it is one of the things that create personality. That kind of stuff gives people their features. Actually, popular stuff does so as well. But it is harder to understand if it is about the person or about his way to get in touch with people. Because popular culture shows itself as a way to become closer to others. Or, if rejected, to have problems in communication. Pop media gives more themes to talk and ways to spend time with friends, and that became its main goal.
